There are a few other issues that also needs to be address (but of course I neglected to mention). The compression that is usually done with JPEG files is usually done at the expense of clarity. ie-have a higher compression, the quality suffers.
For GIF's, as I mentioned before, I save them in Photoshop. I then also open and save them back with JPEG View. How large or small the file becomes is also dependent on a few factors. Saving the file with custom Finder icons, quicktime preview, previews with saved images all will add to the file size. After saving back with JPEG view, thats when the compression (to a much smaller size) is done. BTW, JPEG View is I believe a Mac only application. I still use a Mac for most things (after working at Apple Computer for about 11 years, habits are hard to break). If you log onto Yahoo and do a search for GIF converters, I'm sure you can find tons of shareware/freeware type file compression and converters.
