Thanks, everyone. I took all your advice, including Archie's soften and peel; used paint remover [carefully] and peeled off the damned shellac. While the chips won't win Chip of the Year award, at least they look old, used, worn and natural.

So now I do have two Town Hall Round Up $5 chips for trade.
