In her wonderful blend of Yiddish & English, my dear mother would stress two things to me while I was growing up.
1. "If you don't have anything nice to say, keep it under your hat!?#" I knew exactly what she was trying to say. PUBLIC vs PRIVATE is the issue. Personal attacks in public are in poor taste & that's why we have e-mail.
2. Just as important as the first lesson, was, "Don't go outside with holes in your underwear. You never know when you might get hit by a car & wind up in a hospital. What do you think the doctors might say about ME!"
Mom, Please say hello to Roy Rogers & Trigger. Thay are back in the saddle again. :-(>
