It is indeed sad news for us poker players. However, the termination of the WSOP at Binion had been predicted soon after the Binion sister bought out her brothers. Among other things, she claimed that Ted Binion was not running the club properly for maximum profits. Given the problems the WSOP has had with the IRS and given the nature of the beast, I would not be surprised that an accountant might find that it was not a profitable side of the business--but what a loss leader. The other side of the coin is that Binions has always been the gambler's casino--great odds; great place to play. I wonder what will happen to it. I'll bet is soon sold.
I would also bet that the WSOP comes back somewhere else if Binions is not bought or if it is purchased and the new owners don't want to go forward.
