Article in todays Miami Herald:
Indian tribes seek gambling rights from governor.
Four years after voters again nixed (not me)casino gambling, the Seminole tribe is seeking the Chiles administrations' approval for the exclusive right to introduce Las Vegas-style casinos to Florida.
The article goes on to talk about the impact this would have on the parimutual industry. The Miccosukee Indians are also involved in their own seperate negotiations. The Department of the Interior rules require that a governor must negotiate in "good faith". If not, the agency has the authority to go over the governor's head & legalize the Indian casinos. Chiles has not been a suppoter of casino gaming, & is unlikely to agree on a compact.
Interestingly, the Miccosukee Tribe is building a large hotel, west of Miami, in the heart of the Everglades! Do they intend to do as they please, or do they know something that is not being openly discussed?
One further note. Mallory Horne, a Tallahassee lobbyist who is representing Atlantic City casino owner DONALD TRUMP, attended the meetings. "Trump hopes to manage the Seminole casinos if they are legalized." I will keep you updated on developments as they become available.
