I basically use a HP ScanJet 5p with Adobe Photodeluxe 2 software. The software and taking the time to touch up the brightness and contrast are what makes the difference between a terrible scan (like you often see on eBay) and a great scan. The Sharpen function helps greatly also.
You might want to jump to the archives on this board and search for the key word "scanning". There were several threads back in March and April where we discussed some of the mechanics and what seems to work best. As I recall they were named things like SCANNING 101, WHAT SCANNER TO USE, and SCANNING REVISITED. Let me know if you have any questions after reading these, or if you have trouple finding them.
