Don,
I can't wait to read the article! I can't be any help with photographing the dot but I thought I'd mention a security feature on a chip that you might not be aware of.
Its on the Grand Opening chip from Harrah's in Joliet. The chip is two sided, with "Grand Opening" at the top on one side and "Southern Star II" at the top on the other side. Other than that, the chips appear to be identical. But, if you look at the picture of the boat you will notice that there is a large Harrah's logo on the back of the boat. If you look with a magnifying glass at that logo on the "Grand Opening" side of the chip you will see that it has been microprinted with the words "Southern Star II Joliet, Illinois". The logo on the other side has no microprinting.
I thought that was an interesting security feature for a $5 chip.
